Dental implants have a remarkable success rate of more than 95%. If you receive them, there is no reason to be unduly worried about them failing. However, on the off-chance that one of your implants does end up failing, your dentist might determine that it needs to be removed. What can you expect during and after the removal process? This blog post explains what you should know.

The Details Vary from Case to Case

It is important to remember that every case of dental implant failure is unique. The complexity and difficulty of your removal surgery will depend on a few factors:

  • The length of time since you received the implant. The chemical bond between dental implants and the surrounding bone tissue becomes stronger with time. If it has been a few years or longer since you received implants, removing a failed one can be challenging.
  • The location of the implant. Usually, removing implants from the upper jaw is easier than removing them from the lower jaw.
  • Your unique oral anatomy. If one of your implants is very close to a nerve or other critical structures, removing it can be quite delicate.
  • The shape and size of the implant. Long, narrow implants are more challenging to remove than short, wide ones.

The Removal Procedure

The team that performs your removal surgery will do all they can to make you comfortable. For example, you will likely be sedated.

Once you are settled in, your dentist will carefully remove the implant, taking precautions to cause as little damage as possible to the surrounding bone and other tissues. After the implant is out, you might receive a bone graft right away, or you may need a bone graft later on. Some patients also need antibiotics or other treatments to find oral infections.

In rare cases, a new implant can be placed immediately after a failed one is removed. In most instances, though, a healing period of several months is necessary.

After the Surgery

Some soreness and general discomfort are to be expected after your surgery. Pain medication, rest, and changes to your eating habits can facilitate a smooth recovery. Your dental team will give you detailed post-op instructions to minimize your discomfort and support your body’s healing process. The soft tissue at the surgical site is likely to heal within a few weeks, but it may be several months before the bone completely recovers.

Admittedly, the prospect of dental implant removal can seem a bit scary. Communicate with your dental team so you can go into your surgery with confidence that it is the best thing for oral health and your future smile.
